Thomas Jerome (T.J.) Melton, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Blue Ridge Orthopedics with fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder and elbow surgery. He is particularly interested in complex issues related to the knee, shoulder, and elbow, and enjoys taking care of athletes of all ages. Originally from Travelers Rest, South Carolina, he graduated summa cum laude from Furman University with a degree in biology. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina on an Army scholarship.
Upon graduation from medical school, he began his military service and completed orthopedic surgery residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Following residency, he served as a general orthopedic surgeon at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, and then at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
He completed his military career in 2023 and went on to pursue subspecialty training in sports medicine and then shoulder and elbow surgery. He completed his surgical sports medicine fellowship in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center and The Noyes Knee Institute. Working under the guidance of distinguished faculty that included Frank Noyes, MD, he learned advanced techniques in both arthroscopic and open surgical reconstruction involving the knee, shoulder and hip. He also assisted in the care of high school, collegiate and professional athletes that included Miami (OH) University and the Cincinnati Bengals. He then completed an additional fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery and upper limb trauma in Cambridge, England, at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr. Melton is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) as well as the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS). He enjoys spending time outdoors and reading about American and British history. He and his wife have three children.
